League coaches tab Noel, Poythress preseason All-SEC

On opening day of the 2012-13 college basketball season, freshmen Nerlens Noel and Alex Poythress were voted to the preseason All-Southeastern Conference teams by the league’s coaches.

Noel, the top-ranked player in the 2012 high school class, was one of eight first-team selections. Poythress, another key player in John Calipari’s No. 1 recruiting class, made the second team. The media also placed Noel on the first team and Poythress on the second team a couple weeks ago.

Noel, a high school Parade All-American, averaged 16.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in UK’s two exhibition wins. Poythress tallied 8.0 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 54.5 percent in the victories.

Both will open their season Friday night against Maryland in the Barclays Center Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Stay tuned for a scouting report of Friday’s game, a live blog from the Barclays Center and postgame coverage.
