Surprisingly, it had been awhile since a Kentucky Wildcat had won one of the Southeastern Conference’s weekly honors. That streak ended Monday with the announcement that Willie Cauley-Stein is this week’s SEC Freshman of the Week.
Monday’s announcement marks the first time a UK player has won a weekly SEC award since the third week of the season. Cauley-Stein is the fourth Cat to win an honor this season, joining teammates Archie Goodwin, Alex Poythress and Kyle Wiltjer.
Cauley-Stein earned the honor with a double-double against Eastern Michigan. He scored 11 points and grabbed 11 boards in the 90-38 win.
The freshman forward hit 5-of-6 shots form the field, blocked two shots and grabbed two steals as UK held the Eagles to 38 points and 24.2 percent shooting. Both the point total and shooting percentage were the lowest allowed in the four-year John Calipari era.
Missouri’s Phil Pressey won SEC Player of the Week.
