The Southeastern Conference recognized Nerlens Noel’s suddenly emerging game by naming him the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Noel earned the honors after averaging 11.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 6.5 blocks in wins over Tennessee and at Auburn. Noel, who has grabbed six or more rebounds in every game this season, is the only player standing 6-foot-5 or taller who ranks in the top 30 in blocks (4.1 per game), steals (2.6) and rebounds (9.2) in the nation.
The 6-10 freshman moved into fifth place on UK’s freshman blocked shots list and is one shy of cracking the single-season top 10 with 69 rejections.
Monday’s award marks Noel’s first career SEC honor. It was the fifth time a Wildcat has been named SEC Player or Freshman of the Week this season.
All four of UK’s freshmen have been tabbed the league’s freshman of the week recipient at least once this season.
