Nerlens Noel, the 2013 Southeastern Conference Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year, was named to the 2013 United States Writers Basketball Association All-Freshman Team on Wednesday.
Noel was named one of the top five freshmen in the country, joining Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year award winner Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State), Anthony Bennett (UNLV), Ben McLemore (Kansas) and Shabazz Muhammad (UCLA) on the team.
Despite missing the final seven regular-season games of the year, Noel’s 106 blocks ranks second all-time in school history behind Anthony Davis’ single-season record of 186 swats.
Noel averaged 10.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in 24 games played. His 50 steals were the fifth most by a Kentucky freshman in a single season.
The 6-foot-10 freshman is starting to reel in end-of-the-year honors as the 2012-13 season comes to a close. He has already been named SEC Freshman of the Year, SEC Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-SEC. He also made the USBWA All-District IV Team on Tuesday in addition to making the SEC Community Service Team.
