John Calipari keeps saying it, and the facts keep backing him up: Kentucky is about more than just basketball. Academics at UK matter, too.
The latest example was the Southeastern Conference’s First-Year Academic Honor Roll, which was made up of six Kentucky Wildcats. The first-year players included freshmen Willie Cauley-Stein, Archie Goodwin, Nerlens Noel and Alex Poythress, along with transfers Tod Lanter and Julius Mays.
To make the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1.) have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or above at the nominating institution; 2.) be on scholarship or a letter winner; 3.) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nomination institution; and 4.) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA championship segments.
The 2012-13 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2012-13 academic calendar.
