It seems like every college basketball outlet has released its “way-too-early” preseason rankings over the past few days, and though these rankings are quite silly in reality, they’re still fun to look at. (If people didn’t enjoy looking at them, then nearly every college basketball outlet wouldn’t produce them).
The reason these rankings are silly is because many of these teams’ rosters – not only Kentucky’s – are still very much up in the air. Not only is it not known who all will leave and who will stay, but teams are also still out recruiting in hopes of rounding out their 2017 class with a bang.
Regardless, ESPN, CBS Sports, Sports Illustrated, College Basketball Talk, Sporting News and Yahoo! Sports have released each of their way-too-early preseason rankings, and if those rankings hold true the Wildcats will begin the 2017-18 season in a familiar spot: near the top.
ESPN and Yahoo! both have the Cats beginning next season on top of the polls. SI has UK at No. 2 and Sporting News has the Cats checking in at No. 3. CBS has UK at No. 8 in its early rankings and CBT has UK just outside of the top 10 at No. 12.
It should be noted that each of these rankings have different beliefs on which Wildcats they think will go pro and which ones will return for another season. Only De’Aaron Fox and Malik Monk have declared for the 2017 NBA Draft at this point.
Kentucky has started the season ranked in the top two in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 in each of the past four years, and has started the year ranked in the top three in each of the past six years. UK has been in the preseason top five in the AP poll in seven of Coach Cal’s eight years at UK.
