PJ Washington has double-double in semifinal loss

USA Basketball, led by Kentucky head coach John Calipari, cruised into the semifinals of the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Cairo, but fell to a strong Canadian team, 99-87, on Saturday.

Kentucky freshman forward PJ Washington played well for USA (5-1) in the loss, posting his first double-double of the tournament with a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. It marked the third time in six games that Washington led USA in scoring.

Fellow UK freshman Hamidou Diallo struggled with foul trouble for much of the game and finished with eight points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

USA had no answer defensively against Canada (5-1), which shot 42.1 percent from the field, including 51.0 percent from inside the arc, and made a number of clutch baskets when it looked like the Americans were making a run. USA actually outrebounded Canada 62-53 and committed just 14 turnovers.

The Americans led 23-17 after the first quarter, but Canada averaged more than 27 points in each of the final three quarters of the game. Prior to Saturday’s loss, USA had given up more than 69 points just one time in its first five games.

USA will face Spain (5-1) in the third-place game on Sunday at noon ET. Spain lost to Italy in the semifinals on Saturday. In group play, Spain defeated Canada 78-73, handing the Canadians their lone loss in the tournament.

“It’s going to be a hard one, as a staff and all of us,” Calipari said. “You move on to the next one. In this kind of environment, you don’t even get a day to grieve. You just have to move on. So, we’ll go back and see if we can get something going.”
