Las Vegas Summer League update

The NBA offseason has garnered plenty of attention and headlines this summer. From the big free agent signings to the trades, the NBA has been a popular subject of many sports TV and radio shows.

In addition to all the NBA player movement and contract headlines, the three NBA summer leagues, especially the Las Vegas league, have also been quite popular. The Las Vegas Summer League has reached the playoffs part of the schedule after each of the 24 teams played three games for seeding purposes.

Nine Wildcats have played in the Las Vegas Summer League at this point, and many of those nine Wildcats have had standout performances, including lottery picks Bam Adebayo and De’Aaron Fox.

Adebayo, fresh off a strong outing at the Orlando Summer League in which he averaged 17.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in four games, continued his strong play in Las Vegas. The Miami Heat’s new big man opened play in Las Vegas with 18 points and 10 rebounds against the San Antonio Spurs. He backed that up with 16 points and seven rebounds against the Washington Wizards, and 13 points and nine rebounds versus the Dallas Mavericks. Entering the playoffs, Adebayo is averaging 15.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in 28.3 minutes per game. He’s also shooting an impressive 84.0 percent at the free-throw line.

Fox, the No. 5 overall pick of the Sacramento Kings, is averaging 15.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.7 steals in 25.7 minutes per game. Facing the Phoenix Suns in the Kings’ opener, Fox had 18 points, three rebounds, four assists and a whopping five steals. He had 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals one game later against the Memphis Grizzlies.

After closing out his rookie season on a high note, Skal Labissiere has teamed up with Fox and played well for the Kings after three games. The athletic big is averaging 8.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.

Archie Goodwin, who is entering his fifth season in the NBA, is having a balanced Summer League statistically with 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game in the Brooklyn Nets’ three games. His best game came Monday against the New Orleans Pelicans when he scored 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2 for 3 from deep, grabbed four boards and dished out eight assists with just one turnover.

Like Adebayo, Alex Poythress, Aaron Harrison and Isaiah Briscoe came to Las Vegas after playing in a previous summer league. In their case that was the Utah Summer League.

Poythress averaged 12.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in the three-game Utah Summer League. After three games in Las Vegas, Poythress is averaging 10.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

Harrison, after averaging 7.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game in Utah, is putting up 11.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in Las Vegas.

Briscoe’s best game in Las Vegas came against the Spurs on Sunday, when he scored five points on 2-of-4 shooting and dished out three assists in 10 minutes.

James Young, playing for the Pelicans in the Summer League, has put up 7.3 points and 2.0 rebounds per game over the opening three games.

Mychal Mulder signed a Summer League deal with the Toronto Raptors and is averaging 4.0 points, 1.0 rebound and 1.5 assists per game in two games for the Raptors, including one start.

A Summer League schedule and full game-by-game rundown of each of the nine Wildcats who have played in the Las Vegas Summer League is below. Dominique Hawkins and Isaac Humphries have not played yet. Tyler Ulis is on the Phoenix Suns’ Summer League roster but will not play after undergoing ankle surgery in May.
