Kentucky Basketball on SEC Network Takeover

It’s that time of year again. The third annual SEC Network Takeover begins Monday, and it begins with the Big Blue Nation’s favorite school, Kentucky.

Beginning Monday at midnight ET, the University of Kentucky will control the TV programming for the SEC Network for 24 hours. Included in that 24-hour window will be two Kentucky basketball games from last season and ESPN’s recent 30 for 30 documentary on UK head coach John Calipari, “One and Not Done.”

The complete lineup of Kentucky’s SEC Network Takeover is at the bottom of this post. First, let’s look at the three Kentucky basketball pieces on the schedule.

Kentucky vs. North Carolina (Dec. 17, 2016) – Midnight ET

This year’s SEC Network Takeover begins with one of the most exciting regular-season games of the entire 2016-17 college basketball season. Kentucky guard Malik Monk scored 47 points, the most ever by a freshman in program history, and UK defeated North Carolina 103-100 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in the CBS Sports Classic.

In a game full of highlights, the biggest came with less than 30 seconds remaining and Kentucky trailing by two. Monk received the ball on the left wing and, with his coaching telling him to drive to the basket, decided to pull up and buried a 3-pointer that proved to be the game winner.

Kentucky vs. UCLA (March 24, 2017) – 5:30 a.m. ET

Kentucky has not lost at Rupp Arena often under Coach Cal. In fact, the Wildcats are 134-6 at Rupp Arena in the Calipari era. One of those six losses was to UCLA on Dec. 3, 2016. The Wildcats faced the Bruins again in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in Memphis, and this time it was a much different story.

Kentucky guard De’Aaron Fox scored UK’s first eight points and finished with 39 points, the most ever by a freshman in NCAA Tournament history, and the fourth most by a Wildcat in an NCAA Tournament game, regardless of class. The 86-75 win over third-seeded UCLA propelled UK to its sixth Elite Eight appearance in eight seasons under Calipari.

ESPN 30 for 30: One and Not Done – 10 p.m. ET

Kentucky’s day for the SEC Network Takeover concludes with ESPN’s 30 for 30 on Coach Cal, “One and Not Done,” directed by the great Jonathan Hock. The documentary captures Calipari’s entire coaching career and also goes back to his childhood and how he got into coaching in the first place.

Hock and his crew were with Coach Cal during his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in September of 2015, and also followed the team at several games during the 2015-16 season.
