Davis wins first SEC Freshman of the Week honors

Here we go again.

One year after Kentucky tied the Southeastern Conference record for weekly awards in a season – which was set the previous season by UK – John Caliapri’s team is already collecting (figurative) hardware for the 2011-12 season.

The league tabbed UK forward Anthony Davis its SEC Freshman of the Week after posting a double-double (23 points and 10 rebounds) in the season opener against Marist. The 6-foot-10, 222-pound freshman from Chicago hit 10-of-13 shots, eight of which were dunks.

“I just want him to keep getting better,” Coach Cal said at Monday’s media availability. “The film session we had Saturda,y I was all over him — I mean all over him. He’s looking at me like, ‘I had 23, 12 and five blocks and I really had seven blocks. What do you (want)?” And I’m like, ‘I’m not worried about Marist. I’m worried about North Carolina, I’m worried about Kansas, I’m worried about Louisville. You can’t play that way and us win.’ He’s done well though. He had good numbers last game.”

Davis added five blocks and three assists in the season opener. He became the third UK player to tally 20 points and 10 rebounds in his UK debut, joining Terrence Jones (2010) and Sam Bowie (1979) in elite company.

“He’s a lot like Marcus Camby; maybe shoots it a little better but the same physique,” Calipari said. “If you expect him to be Shaq (O’Neal) you’re kidding yourself because he’s never going to be Shaq.”

The media’s preseason selection for SEC Freshman of the Year, Davis figures to be a factor in every SEC Freshman of the Week balloting. Former UK point guard Brandon Knight tied James “Hollywood” Robinson for the most SEC Rookie/Freshman of the Week awards last year with six.

Tennessee’s Trae Golden won SEC Player of the Week honors.

UK remains at No. 2

Kentucky stayed at No. 2 in both of this week’s major polls with one first-place vote in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll. North Carolina still has the top spot.

The top 10 remained fairly unchanged with the exception of Vanderbilt, which plummeted following its loss to Cleveland State.

Kentucky’s opponent on Tuesday, Kansas, climbed to No. 12 in the Associated Press Top 25 and moved to No. 11 in the Coaches’ Poll following its season-opening 100-54 thrashing of Towson.
