Game Notes

Saturday's thorough domination of Arkansas began with an 10-0 run and didn't end until every Wildcat player had registered at least 3 minutes - but none played more than 29.

Quote of Note

John Wall

“I think that is the best thing that Coach Cal has done with us except for Camp Cal when we were off for break. I think that is the best thing he did because everybody is playing different and harder than we did before.  When you think about it, when you lose two games you are going to be upset. He hasn’t lost two games in a row in a long time, so he got our mind set to practice that way.” - On Coach Calipari telling the team to practice as if they had lost two in a row

Pre Game Notes

The song remains the same for the Wildcats as they face their fourth SEC opponent of the season: Win the battle inside and win the game. With no one on the roster over 6-foot-9, Arkansas will be reliant on the deep ball.

"If they hit 40 three's from beyond NBA range with hands in their faces," Coach John Calipari said  in the morning walk-through."It's been a hell of a start to the season, men."

• Today is Perry Stevenson's birthday. His mom, aunt and sister are in town and Ellen Calipari baked Perry brownies as she does for each of the birthday boys on the team.

• The traditional halfcourt shot to end practice wasn't hit until the final freshman launched his shot. If you're thinking it was a guard, think again. DeMarcus Cousin swished it home to a loud cheer.

Post Game Notes

Saturday's thorough domination of Arkansas began with an 10-0 run and didn't end until every Wildcat player had registered at least 3 minutes - but none played more than 29.

It was, by far, the most complete game UK has played this season and unless all the college hoops writers and coaches in the nation are severely delusional (and with the writers, that's a distinct possibility), the Cats will be voted the number one team in the nation on Monday. With a 101-70 win to propel the, there should be little doubt. Even from the hard-to-please head coach.

“I don’t know if we’re number one but I thought we played well," said Coach John Calipari, who stands to become the first coach ever to lead three different schools to the top spot in the polls. "Number one in the country is not a burden, it’s a badge of honor, and so for us we’ll see how we respond now."

How the Wildcats responded on Saturday was with a plus-20 edge on the backboards (59-29) and by placing four players in double figures scoring (led by Darius Miller with 18, DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall with 16 a piece and Eric Bledsoe with 10). Cousins added in 14 rebounds, an assist, a block and two steals in his ever-efficient 17 minutes. Wall had 7 assists and 2 turnovers while Bledsoe had 6 assists and 6 turns.

"We all played incredibly today and everything just clicked," Daniel Orton (6 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks off the bench in 13 minutes). "I think we gave our best effort today. That is the Kentucky that we are."

If true, said Coach Calipari, "then we're going to do some things that you people expect us to do."

“They are very good," said Arkansas coach and former Wildcat, John Pelphrey. "Like I said, their size and speed separates them. Quality frontcourt and depth make them very unique at the college level. Really good and very well coached. They have a chance to be the best team in college basketball this year."

On Monday, at least, they will be the best team after what they hope is half the year.
