March 12, 2010

Bridgestone Arena – Nashville, Tenn.

Quote of Note

John Wall

“I think the best defensive game we played was the Arkansas game and also the second half in our game against Georgia last week.  If we can play like that every night, it will be difficult for teams to beat us.  We’re at our best when teams can’t score on us and we’re knocking down shots.”

Preview written by CoachCal.com Contributor, Josh Sullivan

After a two-loss regular season, Kentucky starts the 2009-10 post-season with an SEC quarterfinal match-up against Alabama, which came from behind to down South Carolina on Thursday. Alabama who is the No. 4 seed in the west.

The first meeting between these two teams ended in an 11-point home victory for the Cats.  John Wall led the Cats with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and DeMarcusCousins added 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Alabama ended their season on a high note beating Auburn and ending the season with a 16-14 (6-10 SEC) record.  The second half of the season has not been kind to Alabama as they lost 7 of their last 10.

Alabama freshman Tony Mitchell who was honored with SEC All-Freshman honors.  The Crimson Tide also placed guard Mikhail Torrance on the All-SEC second team. The most interesting matchup in this game could be how ‘Bama’s big men will do against Cousins, Patrick Patterson and Daniel Orton.  JaMychal Green wil be key for Alabama, but their depth at this position may be a problem for Coach Anthony Grant’s squad, as UK was plus-7 on the boards in the first meeting.

After their second loss of the season Kentucky ended the season on a high note beating both Georgia and Florida to seal their 44th SEC title.  Kentucky should come out rested, and with the depth of their bench at all positions they should have a major advantage against Alabama.  Cousins and Patterson are both averaging over nine rebounds a game in the last five games of the regular season and Kentucky’s rebounding should have a big impact in how they perform in the tournament.  With three players being selected to the All-SEC team - Patterson, Freshman of the Year Cousins, and Player of the Year John Wall - Kentucky could be headed for Saturday’s semi-finals between the winner of the Tennessee-Ole Miss game.
