Big Blue Nation

The Golden Spike

The Golden Spike brings the glorious past of

Kentucky Basketball into the magnificent present.

Without the rich tradition of this basketball program, we would be just another school. But we're not; WE ARE KENTUCKY and part of the responsibility we have is to always recognize and honor our past players, coaches, and significant moments.

That's exactly what we will do here at the Golden Spike. You will get connected to the past with videos, stories, guest bloggers - all sorts of unique ways to capitalize on the deep pool of Wildcat legends that still grace our presence. I want to give some of the all-time Kentucky greats a way to connect with all the fans out there in Big Blue Nation.

The name "Golden Spike" is derived from the legendary nails, or "spikes," that were part of the old floors at Alumni Gym and Memorial Coliseum. The spikes represented significant shots in UK history, perhaps none more memorable than Vernon Hatton's 47-foot heave against Temple in 1957 that eventually led to a triple overtime win over the Owls.

We're driving our Golden Spike into the parquet of this website as a way of linking the present to the past.

Some day I would like to see a GOLDEN SPIKE driven into the floor at Rupp Arena for something fantastic that one of our Wildcats accomplishes on the floor in our storied building.

Come with us and weave the past into the present, at the Golden Spike.
