For a man that’s instituted an open-door policy and welcomed everyone back since taking the head coaching job, this weekend was a formal invitation from Calipari for the players to come home, fortify old bonds and share stories from their heydays.

OK, so the competition wasn’t quite what it was in 1996 and the setting was a bit more relaxed, but players from the 1996 national championship showed they’ve still got a little talent in those aging bones and muscles.

Five spots remain for the inaugural fantasy experience, which will take place Sept. 13-15 at the University of Kentucky’s state-of-the-art athletic facilities. Participants will be able to live the life of a UK basketball player for the weekend, including unprecedented access to Calipari and the inner workings of the UK basketball program. The experience will feature everything from uniforms to practice sessions, film sessions, and being coached by UK staff and former players.
John Calipari is excited for the UK Alumni Charity Game for a number of reasons. More than anything, though, he wants to hand out big checks for charity in the middle of Rupp Arena.
As John Calipari hinted a few weeks ago, members of the 1996 national championship team will play an exhibition game against an all-star team from the John Calipari Fantasy Basketball Experience prior to the alumni game on Sept. 15. Derek Anderson, Anthony Epps, Walter McCarty, Jared Prickett, Jeff Sheppard, Wayne Turner, Oliver Simmons and Antoine Walker have confirmed their participation for the game.
The 1996 national championship team was in town this weekend for a reunion. Although John Calipari wasn’t the head coach of the team at that time, he was invited to stop by and meet with some of the guys Sunday evening.
